Classification and ordination represent two different ways of bringing about the simplification necessary to render intelli- gible a complex set of vegetational data. Both approaches ne- cessarily lose a proportion of the information present in the original data, but the information lost, and the information retained and emphasised, is different in the two cases. Certain features of vegetation data lend themselves to treatment by or- dination, while other features favour the use of classification, and it is suggested that the most effective scheme of analysis for any extensive set of data will make complementary use of techniques of both kinds. The potential value of factor rotation methods, cornbining certain features of established classificati- on and ordination techniques, are briefly discussed.
