Die Frage "Gibt es Atome oder nicht?" bildet in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts eine scharfe Trennlinie zwischen den empirischen Naturwissenschaften und der (noch machtigen) Philosophie. In dieser Wendezeit, kurz bevor sich die moderne Atomphysik durchsetzt, begibt sich Gustav Theodor Fechner (1801-1887) auf eine gefahrliche Gratwanderung. Uberzeugt von der Zukunftsperspektive atomistischer Ansatze sammelt und ordnet er Begrundungszusammenhange fur eine moderne Physik, jedoch ohne dabei die Philosophie auszugrenzen. Im Gegenteil, die philosophische Arbeit ist unerlalich fur den begrifflichen Abschlu der physikalischen Untersuchungen. Fechners Werk markiert in der Wissenschaftsgeschichte den ersten und letzten Versuch, eine fruchtbare Synthese zwischen quantitativen und qualitativen Erkenntnismethoden zu schaffen, ohne die beiden Ansatze zu vermischen. Erst 150 Jahre spater, am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts, nachdem die empirischen Naturwissenschaften bereits an Grenzen gestoen sind, werden Fechners "zu fruhe" ganzheitliche Uberlegungen wieder aktuell.
