Synopsis

This series showcases the techniques and talents of some of the most brilliant and innovative textile artists, who use a huge variety of methods, materials and design ideas. It covers all kinds of creative fabric embellishment, from creating decorated patchwork items to incorporating mixed media into art or functional pieces. The books are packed with step-by-step instruction, inspiration and ideas.

Alysn Midgelow-Marsden shows how to use both textile-based and mixed media techniques to create beautiful artworks using metal in the forms of shim, foil and woven fabric alongside many other materials. She shares her expertise in an inspiring variety of techniques from free machine stitching to gilding, embossing, needle felting, beading, printing, applique, making stitched foil fabric and using dry decal transfer images. There are eight beautiful projects to inspire and instruct textile artists everywhere, including a lampshade, bauble pods, a memory lampshade, decorative panels and a tablet cover. Artists can take inspiration from the individual surfaces that make up the pieces, he completed projects, and from the developments from each project, which have full, instructive captions. An invaluable resource for textile artists looking for new and beautiful ideas.

Alysn is a successful textile artist, freelance tutor and author with a depth of understanding of mixed media techniques. Unusually for an 'embroiderer' she uses a lot of metals, stitching into the hard shiny surface to create patterns, textures and pictures using both hand stitch and a sewing machine. She teaches, runs workshops and courses, mentors those wishing for more individual attention, and has written three books. She owns The Beetroot Tree Gallery for Contemporary Arts and Artfully Bound Publishing. The latter was founded by Alysn and is in association with Art Van Go. Alysn lives in New Zealand with her family.
