Synopsis

Following its bestselling edition of "Bradshaw's Handbook 1863", "Old House" brings you this fascinating guide to Europe's rail network on the very brink of the First World War. Published in 1913, it is divided into three sections: timetables for services covering the continent, short guides to each city and notable destination and features, and a wealth of advertisements and ephemeral materials concerning hotels, restaurants and services that might be required by the early twentieth century traveller by rail. It affords a fascinating glimpse of fin de siecle Europe and of a transport network that was shortly to be devastated by the greatest war the world had ever seen.

Customer Reviews

I saw the television series based on 'the Bradshaw' and I ordered a copy as soon as I became aware that the guide was reprinted. It contains a treasure of information on the Europe of 1913, on the verge of the Great War, and it is great fun to stroll through the timetables and advertisements of the fine hotels of a century ago. The 'Bradshaw' is warmly recommended to all those with a minimal intrest in the history of our part of the world.

This is a fascinating book with timetables and maps of Europe’s railways on the eve of the First World War. It is a railway researcher’s delight as well as affording the reader the opportunity of planning a rail trip from London to Budapest, Belgrade or Berlin, or even to Irkutsk in Siberia. With hundreds of adverts for hotels, you can gauge the cost of a weekend in Paris in 1913 (Hotel Majestic in the Avenue Kleber has double beds from 14 Francs or 11 shillings or from 20 francs or 16 shillings, for a private bathroom). There are maps and a wealth of information on many cities and towns. The compilers wrote of Versailles, “The Palace and Gardens are of intense interest from their associations, but as ‘sights’ they are to many disappointing.” Well you can’t please everybody. The only drawback, despite the book being more than 1000 pages, is the small type. However, as this is a faithful facsimile of the 1913 Bradshaw’s there is no genuine ground for complaint.
