Synopsis

INDIA'S DISAPPEARING RAILWAYS is a vibrant photo-essay by Australian photographer Angus McDonald, capturing for the first time in print the sub-continent's unique narrow-gauge hill railways in all their vivid colour, character and chaos. It is an intimate and humorous portrait of life on the trains, evoking the very soul of India; and with a rare empathy and insight illustrates the lives of those who ride them, who work on them, and who live alongside them. Yet as the nation modernises, these railways - whether in the snow-peaked Himalaya, the terai of Rajasthan or the verdant Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu - are vanishing. India's Disappearing Railyways records a way of life that is slowly disappearing - the Indian government is gradually converting its narrow-gauge lines - and documents the diversity of this vast and multilayered country from a unique standpoint.

Photojournalist and travel writer Angus McDonald spent three years compiling INDIA'S DISAPPEARING RAILWAYS: an homage to the country he loved and in which he grew up and, as an adult, travelled and lived for eight years. His photographs and articles have appeared in leading publications worldwide and he is the author of The Five Foot Road: In Search of a Vanished China (Angus & Robertson) which documented his 1994 journey across China to Burma in the footsteps of George Ernest Morrison: 'Morrison of Peking'. Angus died suddenly whilst travelling in Burma in 2013, at the age of fifty.

Customer Reviews

This is a beautifully produced book. The photos are excellent and include some great railway photos, though the emphasis is more on the human life on and around the railways - passengers, railway staff, people at the trackside etc - rather than on the locos and rolling stock. I got this as a present for a narrow guage railway enthusiast who would like to go to some of these railways, and who seemed very happy to receive it.
