Synopsis

The Rover P6 is an engineering milestone for the British motor industry. It was lauded by the contemporary motoring press, and many attributes of its design have informed fundamental cornerstones in sports saloon design which can still be seen today. It was the first car to wing the European Car of the Year Award. It was designed from a clean sheet and included several advanced safety features. Its legacy is immense and yet remarkably under-explored in print. This will be the first book to critically evaluate the ground-breaking design of the car and production facilities. The author provides concise but detailed assessments of various key areas of P6's design to offer an insight into the car's achievements against the contextual backdrop of the contemporary motor industry, automotive technologies, and selling markets. Chapters will be succinct, self-contained assessments of one theme and driven primarily by a single line of argument to offer a critical insight and stimulate debate. In many ways, each chapter is similar to an article from a high-end motoring magazine, but with a tighter focus.

The book provides insight and analysis to serve as debate-points for P6 enthusiasts and owners wishing to discuss the history of the car in more depth as well as an informative overview for those with a wider interest in British motoring.

Michael Allen works in marketing and is the Secretary for The Rover P6 Club. He has led the Club's relaunch and growth since 2012 with a strategy to lead the promotion of the car as perhaps the most technologically advanced saloon car ever produced by an independent British motor producer. He is responsible for the Club's visual identity, PR and communications, and messaging. He regularly writes technical and historic articles for Driving Force, the P6 Club's bi-monthly magazine, and 'relaunched' the P6 as at a faux-motorshow ceremony to the press at the NEC Classic Motor Show in November 2014. Michael lives on Merseyside and owns a small fleet of classic cars, including a modified and uprated 1972 Rover 2000 TC.
