When Adrienne Brady accepted a teaching post in Tripoli in 1993 she saw it as a rare opportunity to explore a country virtually barred to the western world. Tourism did not exist and Adrienne recognised that a residency would be a passport to travel into the unknown territory of Libya.

Within a month of her arrival the UN renewed and tightened sanctions and an attempt was made on Gaddafi's life. Against this political upheaval and chaos, Adrienne shares her first hand accounts of arriving in Tripoli alone and her arrest when she was mistaken as a CIA agent, recalling the tension left in the wake of Gaddafi's failure to hand over the Lockerbie bombing suspects.

Then in 2003, when the Lockerbie suspects had been extradited and Libya had abandoned its weapons of mass destruction programme, the UN lifted sanctions, direct flights to Tripoli were restored and Libya opened its doors to the outside world. iIt was at this point I realised that I had a unique story that went beyond the everyday substance of travel writing. The interweaving of independent travel with history, politics and culture against a backdrop of
espionage adds considerable dimension and zest.'

Kiss the Hand You Cannot Sever shows Libya in remarkable detail, through Adrienne's ever sharp eye:
delivered through her ever sharp prose, it reveals a first hand story behind the headlines.
