A Year of Books
Account Services

Fiction. Non-Fiction. Children’s & Young Adult. It’s hard enough pulling together the highlights of each of these broad, many-splendored categories—let alone to pick a single winner for each. So this year we thought we’d share our shortlists for each category, to give a better sense of the breadth of stellar publishing from throughout the year.

Whittled from the books published or available to us by the time of selection, the shortlists come together through a definitely-not-scientific combination of Foyles bestsellers, staff vote, reader response and lots and lots of arguing discussion. Together they form a snapshot of a stand-out year: a year of brand new classics, game-changing debate, of sheer literary splendour, and humanity.

So here, without further ado, are our most essential, important, meaningful, beloved books of 2019 so far. Take a look through and see what’s missing from your to-be-read list—and stay tuned for the announcement of the three Foyles Books of the Year at the end of November!
