I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating: Alec Soth in conversation
“When I returned to photography, I wanted to strip the medium down to its primary elements. Rather than trying to make some sort of epic narrative about America, I wanted to simply spend time looking at other people and, hopefully, briefly glimpse their interior life.”
Hear multi-prize-winning American photographer Alec Soth discuss his craft, and his latest book I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating—currently the object of exhibitions in Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco and Berlin.
Known for his large-scale photographs of the Midwestern United States, Soth devotes his new project— named after a line in Wallace Stevens’ short poem The Gray Room—to intimate portraits taken all over the world. Soth will explore how this change of direction—distancing the work from particular places and populations, and focusing exclusively on one-on-one encounters—allowed him to capture the private, and create a familiar connection between his viewers and the strangers on the page.
