About The Author

Robin Stevens

Robin Stevens

Robin was born in California and grew up in an Oxford college, across the road from the house where Alice in Wonderland lived. She has been making up stories all her life. When she was twelve, her father handed her a copy of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and she realised that she wanted to be either Hercule Poirot or Agatha Christie when she grew up. She spent her teenage years at Cheltenham Ladies' College, reading a lot of murder mysteries and hoping that she'd get the chance to do some detecting herself (she didn't). She went to university, where she studied crime fiction, and then she worked at a children's publisher. Robin is now a full-time author, and her books, The Murder Most Unladylike Mysteries and The Guggenheim Mystery, are both award-winning and bestselling.

MMUThe theme of Robin's first novel, Murder Most Unladylike, will not come as any suprise to those who know her: it features Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong, who set up their very own deadly secret detective agency at Deepdean School for Girls, but struggle to find any truly exciting mysteries to investigate, until, that is, they find a body in the gym....

Below, Robin picks her top four murder mysteries for children - or adults for that matter - to enjoy on their bun-break, plus you can read the first two chapters of her own debut here.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
(Paperback)

Holmes is brilliant, and these stories are a perfect introduction to the famous detective. Look out especially for ‘The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle’, which features a Christmas goose that has unfortunately eaten an extremely large sapphire . . .

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
(Paperback)
J. K. Rowling

The Harry Potter books are about witches and wizards, but they’re also really great whodunits. And they’re a top choice for lovers of a good bun-break – no one writes about feasts like Rowling.

The Woman in White
(Paperback)
Wilkie Collins; John Sutherland

An enormously fat and satisfying story involving mysterious fires, mistaken identity, evil Italian noblemen, madness, murder, and my favourite Victorian heroine, Marian Halcombe. Brave, strong and bookish, she’s simply wonderful. And I get the feeling she’d be a bunbreak fan.

Famous Five: Five On A Treasure...
(Paperback)
Enid Blyton
Detectives doesn’t get jollier than the Famous Five. They’re not always the best crime solvers, but they can always be relied on to stumble over a dastardly smuggling plot at exactly the right moment. And they are excellent at picnics. Ginger beer and macaroons all round!

A Murder is Announced (Miss Marple)
(Paperback)
Agatha Christie

This Marple mystery begins with a murder in the local paper – except that this murder hasn’t happened yet. An especially smart and twisty Christie, the plot features a chocolate cake called Delicious Death. As you might guess, things don’t end well – you should always beware the food in a Christie novel . . .
