Yazz Ahmed group presents Alhaan Al Siduri
Join us for a very special music performance by the Yazz Ahmed group. The suite Alhaan Al Siduri, written by the award-winning British-Bahraini composer and trumpeter, was commissioned by Birmingham Jazzlines as part of their fellowship scheme. This suite has been inspired by the songs of the Bahraini pearl divers and the wedding songs of the women drumming groups of Bahrain.
On creating the suite Yazz Ahmed writes:
“Mentioned in the Epic of Gilgamesh, Siduri is a goddess of the Gulf that lives on an island at the edge of the sea. Her land is a garden in which the sun walks in the morning. I decided to imagine that this island mentioned in the epic poem might be Bahrain, the island of two seas
The lyrics are a combination of fragments of traditional Bahraini songs, translated into English, and my own daydreams and musings on my homeland.”
