Celebrating Narrative Non-Fiction: The Portobello Prize

Tuesday 1st May 2018 7pm - 8:30pm 107 Charing Cross Road Literary Event, Signing, Chargeable Event

What makes great non-fiction? And how do you tell a true story?

We've teamed up with Portobello Books, an imprint of Granta which has long been invested in publishing great narrative non-fiction, on the inaugural Portobello Prize - a new prize for new writers, and a search for a great untold story of our times.

This event will bring together a panel of leading practitioners to discuss the craft of narrative non-fiction, its scope and its limitations, and what it means to write a truly great true story.

Mark O'Connell, journalist and author of To be a Machine. (Due to unforeseen circumstances, Mark O'Connell is unfortunately no longer able to attend this event. Taking his place on the panel is Rose George, journalist and author of non-fiction books including The Big Necessity and Deep Sea and Foreign Going.)

Ben Rawlence, author of City of Thorns and Portobello Prize judge.

Sharmaine Lovegrove, publisher at Dialogue Books and Portobello Prize judge.

Sophie Lambert, literary agent at Conville & Walsh and Portobello Prize judge.

The panel will be chaired by author and Editorial Director at Granta Max Porter and followed by a Q&A - where you will get your chance to ask about the nuts and bolts of non-fiction writing, how the winner was determined, and what publishers and agents look for when searching for the next defining book of our age.

There will then be a short break before the winner of the prize is announced.

Tickets: £8 standard / £5 Foyalty members including a glass of prosecco. When purchasing a Foyalty ticket, please do not forget to bring your Foyalty card with you.

Venue: Level 6, Foyles 107 Charing Cross Road
