Set up in honour of influential publisher Klaus Flugge of Andersen Press, Foyles is proud to host this year’s Klaus Flugge Prize shortlist announcement—a prize awarded to the most promising and exciting newcomer to children’s picture book illustration.

In advance of the live announcement, Klaus Flugge Prize chair of judges Julia Eccleshare will join distinguished illustrator Mini Grey on-stage to talk about her illustrious career, the development of her distinctive artistic style, and the continued importance of storytelling told through illustration.

Mini Grey worked as a theatre designer, then a primary school teacher, before studying for an MA in sequential design at Brighton University. Grey's first picture book for children, Egg Drop, a surreal story of an egg that dreams of being able to fly, was published in 2002, establishing her as both a visually exciting illustrator of detailed, colourful artwork and a highly accomplished storyteller. Often narrating from an unusual, often edible, point of view, such as that of the pea in The Pea and the Princess (2003) the biscuit in Biscuit Bear (winner of Nestlé Smarties Gold - 2004) - and the spoon in The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon (winner of Kate Greenaway Award 2007). Mini’s version of Hilaire Belloc’s cautionary tale of Jim who runs away from his nurse and gets eaten by a lion was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Award 2011. Grey’s new book Money-Go-Round, written by Roger McGough, will be published in February 2020.

The event will be followed by a book signing with the shortlisted illustrators, and the opportunity to meet Klaus Flugge himself.
