The Orwell Festival: Reporting the Migrant Crisis

Monday 4th July 2022 7pm - 8:30pm 107 Charing Cross Road Literary Event, Chargeable Event

It is with tremendous pleasure that we present our first event in partnership with the Orwell Foundation. Join us for a discussion between Sally Hayden and Daniel Trilling on their work reporting on migrant routes into Europe. Both recognised by the Orwell Foundation in 2022 for their writing on this subject, Sally and Daniel will examine the current humanitarian crises and the geopolitical climate experienced by refugees, informed by their writing and research into migration.

Sally Hayden is an award-winning journalist focussed on migration and humanitarian crises. Her recent book, My Fourth Time, We Drowned, investigates in shocking detail the experiences of refugees entering Europe from North Africa. Expertly and empathetically written, Sally Rooney describes My Fourth Time, We Drowned as “the most important work of contemporary reporting I have ever read.”

Daniel Trilling is a journalist who writes regularly for numerous publications about human rights and the politics of migration. He was the editor of the New Humanist magazine for a number of years, and has been shortlisted by the Orwell Foundation for this year’s Journalism Prize.

Sally and Daniel will discuss the issues raised in their work with writer and editor, Lucy Popescu. Lucy worked with the English Centre of PEN for over twenty years and is currently chair of the Authors' Club. She recently edited an anthology of essays, A Country to Call Home, which focusses on the experiences of young refugees. The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A. Doors will open from 6:30pm.
