Synopsis

Despite the tiger's place as the world's most beloved species (according to Animal Planet) there are estimated to be fewer than 3,000 wild tigers left in the entire world. A higher number (up to 5,000) exist as "domesticated" tigers, bred like livestock on Chinese farms, and used to supply the black market for tiger bone wine, meat, skins, and other parts. J.A. Mills has spent 20 years as an international wildlife investigator, determined to save the species from extinction. Mills is spurred to action when she goes undercover to investigate bear farming in China and discovers the equally cruel world of tiger farming. Thus begins her fight--taking her from China to Korea to India and Africa, mobilizing international coalitions, working for the World Wildlife Fund and Conservation International among other organizations. In this memoir of geopolitical intrigue, Mills and a host of tiger crusaders try to thwart a Chinese cadre's plan to make The King of the Jungle into a farm animal to drive a billion-dollar luxury-goods industry. Her efforts take her across Asia and Europe, by every means from elephant back to presidential motorcade, and into the company of man-eaters, movie stars and world leaders. Every time victory seems at hand, powerful forces banking on the tiger's extinction intervene, but the fight is not yet lost, as young Chinese activists are determined to protect the tiger. Set against the backdrop of China's reawakening and ascendence to world dominance, Blood of the Tiger is a tale of a global fight to rein in the forces of greed, on behalf of one of the world's most endangered species.
