Foyles Books of the Year

Foyles Books of the Year

The votes have been counted and we are proud to announce our Books of the Year for 2017. This year we have chosen books in three categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction and Children’s. Foyles Booksellers and staff across London, Bristol, Birmingham and Chelmsford took part in the voting process, choosing the winning books from three shortlists made up of the bestselling titles of 2017. It was difficult to choose between some of our favourite books of the year, but we are thrilled with the results. And our winners are...

The PowerFiction Book of the Year

The Power by Naomi Alderman

What if all women developed the power to electrocute people at will? In The Power Naomi Alderman answers this intriguing question in spectacular style, weaving an utterly absorbing narrative around the lives of characters around the world as they bear witness to society's violent transformation. If you like your page-turners whip-smart and ferociously current, this is the book for you.

Why I'm No Longer talking to White People About RaceNon-fiction Book of the Year

Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge

Reni Eddo-Lodge's collection of essays - wonderful for their biting articulation - show an unrelentingly reasonable and thoughtful impression of the spoken and unspoken issues around race in Britain today. Bringing a subject so often couched in US culture and history firmly to the attention of British readers, Reni explores how a legitimised structure of racism has flown under the radar in this country for so long. A bracing and refreshing call to arms.

Goodnight Stories for Rebel GirlsChildren's Book of the Year

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo

A book that reinvents the fairytale for young women. Each inspirational story is beautifully illustrated by a different artist and tells the true story of an exceptional woman. From historical figures like Elizabeth I to sporting greats such as the Williams sisters, these are 100 stories to inspire and delight.

As Heather Baker, our Senior Buyer says,

These three wonderful, inspiring books all centre women’s voices and perspectives in a powerful and unique way. Each addresses an imbalance in power: from Naomi Alderman’s high-voltage tale of social upheaval, to Reni Eddo-Lodge’s urgent discussion of race, class and privilege, to the overlooked tales of courageous women retold so beautifully by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo. Each in its own way is passionate, timely and thought-provoking. I’m immensely proud of this list, and so happy that Foyles is a place where books like this flourish, and conversations begin...
