Doctor Who first appeared on the BBC in black-and-white in 1963, with William Hartnell the first to play the time-traveller from Gallifrey. His was the first Doctor to encounter the Daleks, the mutant cyborgs from the planet Skaro who are the very embodiment of TV villainy. The series continued to scare and entertain viewers, and introduce a wide range of new Doctors and monsters for over twenty five years. The Doctor finally returned to our TVs in 2005, offering a whole new generation of children the opportunity to spend tea-time peeking out fearfully from behind the sofa. Doctor Who remains hugely popular both in the United Kingdom and around the world and is now the longest-running TV science fiction series ever.
