Queer in Translation Book Group: Love Me Tender by Constance Debré

In the fourth meeting of the Foyles Queer in Translation Book Group, we will be discussing Love Me Tender, the striking semi-autobiographical novel by Constance Debré.

When the narrator of Love Me Tender tells her ex-husband that she has started to date women, he makes a string of unfounded accusations that separate her from her young son. The narrator’s new life is monastic and military: she swims daily, reads, writes, and returns to small or borrowed rooms, firm in the belief that no love can last. And yet, she cannot entirely forget about her child. A starkly beautiful account of impossible sacrifices asked from mothers, Love Me Tender is a bold novel of defiance, freedom and self-knowledge.

The Foyles Queer in Translation Book Group is scheduled at two-month intervals, and focuses on queer perspectives and stories from around the world. The book group is led by fiction bookseller Gary Perry.
