Further information:
The original series of Penguin Modern Poets included The Mersey Sound featuring Roger McGough, Brian Patten and Adrian Henri. Since it was published in 1967 it has become the bestselling poetry anthology of all time. Roger was also in the 4th volume of the second series in 1995 with Liz Lochhead and Sharon Olds. His poetry is like a supermodel who can complete a Sudoku puzzle moments before swishing down the catwalk.
Malika Booker’s poems are in Penguin Modern Poets 3: Your Family, Your Body with Sharon Olds and Warsan Shire. Her debut collection, Pepper Seed, was longlisted for the OCM BOCAS 2014 prize and shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney Centre Prize for first full collection. Nine Nights is shortlisted for the Forward Prize for best single poem, to be announced on 21st Sept. Malika says If I am not writing, then I am not breathing.
Penguin Modern Poets 5: Occasional Wild Parties is by Kathryn Maris with Frederick Seidel and Sam Riviere. Darling, Would You Please Pick Up Those Books (a modern, vernacular sestina) was runner-up in the 2008 Troubadour Poetry Competition and Carol Rumens' poem of the week in The Guardian. Her third collection, The House with Only an Attic and a Basement, will be published by Penguin next year.
Each volume of Penguin Modern Poets contains representative work by three modern poets, selected to illustrate the poets’ characteristics in style and form.
