“Makes Withnail & I look like Little House On The Prairie” - Caitlin Moran
Music critic, broadcaster and mauvais vivant John Doran presents his new book Jolly Lad with this evening of talk, spoken word and music.
The Features Editor and co-founder of The Quietus, Doran's long-running Vice column, MENK showcases his cult life stories that straddle the writer's output as an eminent music journalist and an often searingly personal insight into his life beyond. Adapted from the column, Jolly Lad concerns the author’s attempts to deal with his life as a recovering alcoholic, to calm his enthusiasm for narcotics, to take control of his wildly fluctuating mental health issues and to curb a tendency toward bleakness in order to navigate the tricky waters of sober adulthood and become a better father to his young son.
Published by the authoritative and eclectic Strange Attractor Press, Jolly Lad Jolly Lad comes accompanied by an album of spoken word and music featuring Nicky Wire of the Manic Street Preachers, members of British Sea Power, Teeth Of The Sea, Grumbling Fur, English Heretic and Eccentronic Research Council. At this special launch event, critically-acclaimed avant pop duo (and contributors to the Jolly Lad audio album) Grumbling Fur will be performing an exclusive set.
There will also be DJing between the readings and the live music by Hamburger Ladies (The Quietus' Luke Turner and Sophie Coletta).
David Stubbs, author of Future Days: Krautrock And The Building Of Modern Germany and Fear Of Music: Why People Get Rothko But Don't Get Stockhausen will be doing the Q & A on the night.
