This is Going to Hurt by Adam KayThis is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay

A glimpse of the hectic and often harrowing world of being a Junior Doctor, told with a healthy dose of humour. I enjoyed all the medical stuff but what struck me most was the insight into the inner working of the NHS. For anyone who cares about this amazing institution, this book is a must-read.

Sarah, Web Team

'There were points reading back through [my diaries] where I wouldn’t have flinched if an entry had read 'swam to Iceland for antenatal clinic' or 'had to eat a helicopter today'.' Adam Kay talks to us about the highs and lows of being a doctor.

Eleanor Elephant is Completely Fine by Gail HoneymanEleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Eleanor Oliphant is a triumph of characterisation. At first you think she might be suffering from Asperger’s but then you realise her difficulties are all her own, and very much related to a childhood tragedy. But as well as being traumatised, she is also hilarious: outspoken, honest and brave. This is the charming story of how she realises she is not completely fine, steps out of her comfort zone and starts learning how to live in the world.

Winter by Ali SmithWinter by Ali Smith

Last year, four different people had a copy of Ali Smith’s Autumn from me for Christmas – and they all loved it. The next instalment of her seasonal quartet, Winter, in every way lives up to the promise of the first – Smith’s love of language bursts through in a book that draws inspiration from A Christmas Carol, Shakespeare, and Charlie Chaplin. It’s hard to think of a better writer working in English today; this is an alert, nuanced book infused with joy and empathy. That’s four Christmas presents ticked off for me this year.

Mythos by Stephen FryMythos by Stephen Fry

The Greek Gods and Goddesses: capricious, foolish, barbaric and with a massive appetite for life. Stephen Fry breathes new life into these well-known stories and characters, glazed with his wicked humour and unequalled gift to tell a story. I was lucky enough to hear Fry read from this book at Hay Festival and, I'd urge you to listen to the audio book as well as read it, because I now want Stephen Fry to read every book to me forever and ever. This is an absolute treasure of a book.
