Bernard Cornwell

About The Author

Bernard CornwellBernard Cornwell was born in London, was raised in Essex and worked for the BBC for eleven years before meeting Judy, his American wife. Denied an American work permit, he wrote a novel instead and has been writing bestselling historical fiction ever since. His work includes the Sharpe series of novels, which were adapted for television. Other subjects include the American Civil War, the Battle of Agincourt and the Grail Quest series. He was made an OBE in 2006. Bernard and Judy now divide their time between Cape Cod and Charleston, South Carolina.

His latest novel is Fools and Mortals, which follows the young Richard Shakespeare, an actor struggling to make his way in a company dominated by his estranged older brother, William.

Below, Bernard unveils some of his favourite books, among them the inspiration for his Sharpe series. Sadly, two of his selections are out of print: Gerry Clark, The Totorore Voyage, which he described as perhaps the best book to describe a real-life sailing adventure, a bird-watcher's mad voyage around the southern ocean; and Anne Wroe's A Fool and His Money , which he described as 'a wonderful book about everyday life in a 14th century French town. Reading this book is the nearest thing I know to time-travel!'
