23rd October 2013
Three years ago, papercut artist Rob Ryan collaborated with the Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy to create The Gift, a lyrical story of life, love and art. We loved the book so much that we asked Rob to design one our of Christmas windows that year.
The window he created was absolutely stunning - you can see it in the first phopto below - so when we learned about his wonderful new book out this month, The Invisible Kingdom, we thought it was worth seeing if we could arrange another window.
Fortunately, Rob was very keen on the idea too, so his team got in touch with our in-house designer, Jeff Clark, to see what they could come up with. A design took shape and on Monday this week, long before the most of the rest of us made it in to work, Jeff began to slot everything into place. We thought you might like to see how Jeff transformed an empty space into a gorgeous display for a beautiful book. It'll be in place until Monday 4th November.
The window Rob Ryan designed for us back in 2010
How the window was originally conceived (CXR is our cunning abbreviation for Charing Cross Road!)
People clambering about in our windows always draws the attention of curious passers-by
Vinyl transparencies always add a nice touch - but they're fiddlier to apply smoothly than wallpaper!
Vinyls of the Prince and those spangled curtains from the jacket image are added
Now the backing cloth - the effect would be lost with people milling about in the background
We mustn't forget to include copies of the book itself
A note about the exhibition of Rob's work at the Sims Gallery until 8th November (he'll be signing copies there on Saturday 26th, 1-2pm)
A quick check that all looks as it should and we're done
And so we prepare to raise the shutters on another day of trading
