Desperately Seeking Self-Improvement
Fight the fads this January as Foyles invites you to a series of events taking an alternative look at the crazes sweeping self-improvement. In Desperately Seeking Self-Improvement, professors Carl Cederström and André Spicer spent a year throwing themselves headlong into the world of self-optimisation.
Cederström and Spicer, willing guinea pigs in an extraordinary and sometimes downright dangerous range of techniques, had rarely seen the inside of a gym let alone utilized apps that deliver electric shocks in pursuit of improved concentration. Yet in the course of a year they wore head-bands designed to optimize meditation, attempted to boost their memory through learning associative techniques, enrolled in motivational seminars, attended new-age retreats and man-camps, underwent plastic surgery, and experimented with productivity drugs.
Surprisingly the two young professors survived their year of rigorous research and, joined by academic and author of Radical Hapiness Lynne Segal, draw deeply on their experience to offer a biting analysis of what drives us to take these extreme measures in the name of bettering ourselves.
