Back to Black: Retelling Black Radicalism for the 21st Century

Thursday 26th July 2018 7pm - 8pm 107 Charing Cross Road Signing, Chargeable Event

Reclaim ‘radicalism’ as author and educator Kehinde Andrews sits down with writer and blogger Minna Salami for Back to Black: Retelling Black Radicalism for the 21st Century.

Tracing the history of the Black radical tradition—from its origins as resistance to slavery through the Black Panthers to figures such as Marcus Garvey, Malcom X and Angela Davis—Andrews explores what a renewed politics of radicalism might look like in the world today. Looking at modern movements such as #BlackLivesMatter, Andrews reclaims the term ‘radicalism’ from the myths and attacks that it has been subject to and, looking at how deeply racism is embedded in the very fabric of society, ultimately attempts to give an answer to the question: is it already too late?

Andrews will be joined by writer, blogger, speaker, and author of the forthcoming book Sensuous Knowledge: A Radical Black Feminist Approach for Everyone Minna Salami. Together they will discuss the history of radicalism, its modern incarnations and what it means to be a person of colour in modern society.
