Harlem 69: Stuart Cosgrove on Soul

Wednesday 31st October 2018 7:30pm - 9pm Cabot Circus, Bristol Literary Event, Signing, Chargeable Event

Renowned broadcaster and music journalist Stuart Cosgrove will be coming to Foyles Bristol to talk about Soul music and the three turbulent years that changed the United States forever.

As the 60s draw to a close, Harlem is the focal point of the Soul scene. Luminaries such Aretha Franklin and Donny Hathaway are lighting up stages, while police raid tenements across the city. This is the year of the infamous Black Panther trial and Black Woodstock, a year that culminates in the twin tragedies of murder and heroin epidemic. Stuart Cosgrove, author of Detroit 67 and Memphis 68, concludes his magisterial history of Soul with Harlem 69. These books, all written with infectious passion, describe the struggle of a nation facing radical social reform, a struggle that found its voice in music.

Stuart will be joined in conversation by Richard Jones of Tangent books. Tickets are £3 and include a complimentary glass of wine.
