The Age of Anxiety: Pete Townshend in conversation
Meet Pete Townshend, legendary lead guitarist of The Who, as he opens the pages of his debut rock novel The Age of Anxiety—a rebellious fusion of music, drugs, passion and love.
First conceived as an opera, Townshend’s daring first novel takes us on a hallucinogenic ride through the wild, hedonic world of the music industry. Incorporating mythical themes such as a maze, divine madness and long-lost children, The Age of Anxiety is a heady mix of a novel, and an extended meditation on the nature of manic genius and the dark art of creativity from one of the world's greatest rock stars.
Examining the parallels and divergences of novel writing and musical composition, Townshend will also discuss the ten year process that led to the creation of this compulsively readable novel—the latest strand of his already impressive artistic oeuvre. Taking stock of his past and present work, he will give us a glimpse of what the next stage of his illustrious career might look like.
The event will be chaired by playwright and screenwriter Joe Penhall (Sunny Afternoon; Mindhunter) and will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.
