Synopsis

Anna Hibiscus lives in Africa. Amazing Africa.

Anna Hibiscus is back home after visiting her grandma in Canada. But it seems that so much has changed while she was away! Double and Trouble have learned to run and Grandad seems to have grown older. One of the chickens has laid its eggs and eventually they hatch - all except one, which Anna looks after. Finally one morning that egg hatches too and a white ball of fluff appears. Anna names her chick Snow White, and the two are inseparable. But Snow White wreaks havoc wherever she goes, and Anna has a hard time keeping her out of trouble. Anna also has a surprise visitor - someone from Canada has come all that way to see her!

Atinuke was born in Nigeria and spent her childhood in both Africa and the UK. She works as a storyteller in schools and in theatres, telling traditional African tales and reading from her books about Anna Hibiscus and the No. 1 Car Spotter. She now lives in Newport, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Lauren Tobia lives in Southville, Bristol. She shares her tiny house with her husband and their two yappy Jack Russell terriers. When Lauren is not drawing, she can be found drinking tea on her allotment.

Customer Reviews

Having read the first 4 books in this series, my 5 year old and I were delighted to discover that we get to follow Anna's journey when she gets back from Canada. Anna lives in a large city in Africa (maybe Nigeria?), she lives in a compound with her extended family. This series is about a middle-class black African family whose older members hark back to their roots in the village, and to the older African traditions, but who very much live in the c21st; there is also bang-up-to-date inclusion of iPods, Skype, etc. Anna is warm and real, the writing is beautiful, and easy to read out loud to a younger child. This series is a gift - more please, Atinuke!
