Imaging Pilgrimage: Art as Embodied Experience (Hardback)

Pre-order for despatch on publication.

Recent scholarship in the field of medieval studies has established the importance of representations of pilgrimage in the form of manuscripts, labyrinths, and images. Through a close examination of a number of specific case studies including assemblages of souvenirs, built environments, and full-scale reconstructions of sacred sites, this book radically shifts the focus from the Middle Ages to the present day in order to critically study contemporary art that is created after a pilgrimage and intended to act as a catalyst for others to experience grace, healing, and prayerful meditation.

Case studies include a Catholic convert who mapped the Camino de Santiago onto his own backyard after a diagnosis of stage IV cancer; an artist from South Africa who creates shadowboxes and assemblages from souvenirs she collected at Lourdes; the revival of medieval music and chant along ancient British pilgrimage routes; and the turf and stone labyrinths that have been incorporated into Jesuit retreat centers across the United States. This book contributes to the burgeoning field of pilgrimage studies as well as the history of religious art and material culture.
