The author George Giglioli was born in 1897 into a distinguished Italian-British family. Of lasting very special value was his success in challenging and overcoming malaria in one country, Guyana, then British Guiana. Giglioli's life and times are of great interest in many ways. From the 1920s, when he arrived there, to the 1960s Dr Giglioli provides an illuminating and stylish account of Guyanese life, of its people, its flora and fauna both as a colonial and an independent country. The autobiography provides insights into the period of Italian history from Mazzini to the rise of Mussolini as well as Italian experience of World War 1. Like many physicians, as a writer George Giglioli's comments on human nature were sympathetic and amusing and at times memorably penetrating. The pioneering work of this self-confessed 'self-taught physician' (who arrived in South America with no clinical or public health experience) stands as an example of how progress is made when one individual has the will.

In the field of malaria epidemiology (science) and eradication (public health) Giglioli identified both the mosquito species doing the damage in Guyana and the use of DDT to destroy the malaria mosquito carrier in homes. In the mid-20th century Giglioli's work led to Guyana becoming virtually free of malaria. (Sadly it has returned). On the world scene DDT has since been ruled out for health reasons but its reintroduction is now being argued again as part of the reaction to the scourge of malaria in many parts of the world.
