Synopsis

Presenting our Non-Fiction Book of the Year 2021: Nina Simone’s Gum by musician and composer Warren Ellis, a truly one-of-a-kind story of reverence, passion and people coming together, available now signed by the author.

In 1999, an ailing Nina Simone performed her last London concert. She sat down at the piano, took her gum out of her mouth, stuck it on a towel and played. The audience was enraptured. And then, at the end, as the icon left the stage, Warren Ellis shot up and retrieved Nina Simone’s gum.

What follows is an odyssey, with that gum at its heart: the story of a memento, made almost holy by its parentage, which Ellis kept for decades until he shared it with the world. As his long-time bandmate and collaborator Nick Cave mounts an exhibition, Ellis and the gum find a chain of collaborators, each touched by the gum and the growing legend it builds—each changed by their involvement with this project to bring something beautiful and important to the world—until, finally, the gum is let go.

Mixing the story of the gum with memoir, phone messages and the input of Ellis’ fellow conspirators, Nina Simone’s Gum takes you from the minute detail of making casts of delicate objects to the dream of living in a giant piece of gum. The book is highly visual, in places a meticulous methodology and in parts bursting into an exhibition in its own right. It’s an inherently weird, funny and moving ride, and by the end of it you feel as if you’ve been witness to something magical and cathartic, something sublime built out of the ordinary.

With or without knowing Warren Ellis’ music, or even Nina Simone’s—this is a book about love, about passion, about how a small thing can bring people together on a mission to create and share something wonderful. There’s simply nothing else quite like it.
