Customer Reviews

If I could give "The Detriment" six stars I would, I loved it more and beyond and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish! The first few pages instantly grab your attention with a police high speed race to attend a possible car/nail bomb about to explode outside a London nIghtclub. Meanwhile at a similar time a spy is found dead in his garden having fallen from his flat and a blazing Jeep is driven into a Glasgow Airport terminal. All events bound by a secret that should have remained buried forever. I loved the way the author - David Videcette - included real life events into the story, ones which I was fully aware of happening and therefore gave you the feeling of familiarity and instantly allowed you to form a connection with the story. It was also intriguing how there were a few side stories written into the main plot, which constantly kept you entertained and it was extremely clever how they all came together seamlessly in an exciting nail biting end. All the characters were just brilliant, I particularly liked the main protagonist Detective Inspector Jake Flannagan, I was quite taken with him, his relationship with his work partner Lenny was just perfect - the way Lenny looked out for Jake, trying to reign him in when his actions went into overdrive and I also liked Jake's boss Helen who was fair and professional. It really was quite an eye opener reading about the world of politics, government departments and terrorism - the secrets, lies, betrayals, bribes and bungs is truly frightening but also sadly very believable. I found how the author included many various facts throughout and the 'Appendix : Facts" at the end suitably informative, enabling anyone unaware of the largest arms deal ever done in history, to follow the timeline of events as they happened. David Videcette is an excellent and professional writer who pays attention to detail, is very talented and obviously has a wealth of intelligence, using his knowledge of twenty years policing and expertise in terrorism and organised crime and then mixing it with a tremendous imagination to create a fabulous and dangerous story which is both thrilling and compelling. "The Detriment" is the second in the series with "The Theseus Paradox" being the first, which I do own and shamefully admit to not reading yet. That is soon going to be rectified and I intend reading that as soon as possible. Some readers would say to read them in order but I slightly disagree, there's enough in the story to bring you up to date, so although probably entertaining to read first, it's certainly not imperative and without doubt can be enjoyed as a standalone novel. I can't recommend this fast paced, highly entertaining novel enough, truly worth a read and I fully intend to seek out the next in the series that's hopefully out soon. A well deserved 5 stars for a superb book!!
