Synopsis

Individuals are born into a family unit, educated in school groups, socialized in peer groups, earn a living in work groups and worship in groups. At every stage in our lives we belong to groups but regardless of their key role, people are given little opportunity to understand how groups function or develop participation skills. This book is offered as a resource for teachers and others who wish to help groups understand themselves and function more effectively. While most of the exercises are addressed to the class group, they apply equally to other types of groups. Strategy one helps students to explore and review cohesiveness, cooperation and communication in their class group, and decide on a plan of action for improving these processes. Strategies two to four examine the role of norms and leadership and students are encouraged to decide on rules for their class and identify their personal leadership strengths and weaknesses. Students create a profile of the primary and secondary roles they play in the class group and assess their ability to make decisions by consensus as well as looking at problems that currently exist in the class and how these may be solved.

The concluding strategies create a profile of the group behaviour and decide on an action plan for improving personal effectiveness as well as an evaluation of the student's response to the course. Most of the strategies involve group work - providing opportunities to experiment with new behaviours and receive feedback on them.
