Making Spelling Compelling (Paperback)

Pre-order for despatch on publication.

From word scavenger hunts to pattern spotting, this book provides fun, effective and easily adaptable games and activities for improving spelling across the curriculum. Ideal for developing a lifelong confidence in spelling, Marking Spelling Compelling is the perfect photocopiable resource for any primary teacher looking to deliver the spelling curriculum requirements.

With guidance on whole-school policy and practice and on using spelling to enrich pupils' vocabulary, writing and editing skills, this book will refresh and support any spelling scheme already established in school. The games are not only extremely effective in developing a lifelong confidence in spelling but they are also fun, creative and can be easily adapted by teachers. All of the activities have been tried and tested and take a metacognitive approach to help pupils to think about and improve their own spelling. This photocopiable resource also includes links to additional resources that can be downloaded online.

Mark McCaughan is an experienced senior leader and local authority consultant. He has led teacher training in: English Subject Leadership; Best Practice in Reading; Writing; Let's Have a Think - the Power of Metacognition; Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar; Mastery in English; Cross-Phase Reading; Whole-school Literacy; and Cross-curricular Planning and Learning. He has taken on whole-school, subject and pastoral leadership throughout three 'Outstanding' Ofsted inspections and is currently supporting schools where performance was low in the Reading SATs, using the activities provided in his book Igniting Children's Writing to great effect.
