Foyles Children’s Book of the Year 2020 - With free artwork postcards

Far, far away in the North, there was a forest, deep and forgotten.

Enter the darkly beautiful picture book world of The Wolf’s Secret, the first English-language children’s book from co-writers Myriam Dahman and Nicolas Digard, with exquisite illustrations from Júlia Sardà.

In the dark, dense, unnamed forest lives a wolf, who all the animals fear. But the wolf has a secret: every morning he creeps to the heart of the forest, where a woman lives, to hear her sing. But then, one day, she stops.

What unfolds after that is a gorgeous fairy tale of a story, rich in magic and adventure and mystery—a dark tale, reminiscent of the mercurial logic and sharp teeth of classic folk tales that doesn’t shy away from loneliness, sadness and ferocity, but tempers them with friendship, possibility and overcoming.

The Wolf's Secret

It’s a beautiful story, a rich story of promises and curses and eagles and magicians—and Júlia Sardà’s illustrations match it perfectly, channeling the texture and linework of an overgrown forest alongside the tones and patterns of European folk traditions. Her creatures jump effortlessly between savage and sweet, and you can practically smell the air of the deep, dark forest, where trees and moss and fungi fight one another for space.

All in all, The Wolf’s Secret is a new book that feels like a classic—and it’ll stay with you long after you finish it.
