Ce document explore un domaine de l' ducation tertiaire actuellement l' tude: L' tendue et la nature de la diff renciation et de l'articulation des syst mes de l' ducation tertiaire en Afrique. Le r sultat global de cette tude indique qu'il existe un syst me binaire dominant caract ris par le fait que les universit s et les centres polytechniques repr sentent des institutions distinctes. Cette diff renciation apparait clairement Afrique bien que principalement horizontale et non verticale. D'autre part, l'articulation des syst mes semble en tre ses premiers pas. Certaines universit s ne reconnaissent pas les qualifications polytechniques dans leur processus d'admission et la mobilit entre les diff rents types d'institutions similaires sont rares. Les politiques nationales, les forces du march , les r formes institutionnelles, l'industrie et les initiatives r gionales sont la source de cette diff rentiation. Le manque de ressources, l'isomorphie, les structures de bonne gouvernance et de financement, ainsi que l'absence de d bat sur la taille et la forme sont autant de facteurs inhibiteurs. Seule la demande parait tre le moteur de l'articulation, alors que les politiques nationales, les structures de gouvernance interne et les march s de l'industrie et de l'emploi semblent au contraire atrophier sa croissance.
