Synopsis

In an ideal world, how do we imagine and envision university students? This book explores a new concept, the "ideal university student", by providing a critical discussion of what it means to be an ideal student in contemporary higher education. The concept of the ideal student challenges stakeholders such as students, staff and university leaders to reflectively think about their expectations of higher education students, beyond the minimum expectations or requirements (e.g., retention, progression or completion) and to shift their focus instead on the desirable and idealistic traits and characteristics in a university student.

To what extent are these constructions of the ideal student realistic and achievable? Are certain students more or less likely to aspire, identify or even embody characteristics that are desirable? Are there any features of the ideal university student that are widely shared and recognised? What about differences in opinions and values, especially between staff and students? More broadly, how do people from different social backgrounds and positions construct their ideal student? With the growing challenges and concerns over the student transition from schools to universities, especially for those unfamiliar with the 'hidden rules' of higher education, a more specific and explicit understanding of what is expected of students would be important for inclusive and diverse learning and teaching practices. For staff and students, a greater awareness and transparency on ideal expectations of undergraduates offers both parties an opportunity to reflect and articulate the relationship between their thoughts and practice.

This book draws on a 2-year study that collected evidence using focus groups and a questionnaire with 1,043 university staff and students. As Won and Chiu unpack the meanings and constructions of the ideal university student, they highlight how staff and students are both active agents in shaping their respective roles and responsibilities.
