Il retrace ce qu'a mene le jeune collegien des Oratoriens de Niort, poete desargente, ami des Lumieres et admirateur des philosophes, a travers les vicissitudes de la Revolution a se faire legislateur, adjoint de Bonaparte et un des architectes du programme d'enseignement national qui vit le jour aux premieres annees du dix-neuvieme siecle.
