Synopsis

Discover Toni Morrison's most iconic work in this Pulitzer-prize winning novel that exemplifies her powerful and important place in contemporary American literature.

'An American masterpiece' AS Byatt

It is the mid-1800s and as slavery looks to be coming to an end, Sethe is haunted by the violent trauma it wrought on her former enslaved life at Sweet Home, Kentucky. Her dead baby daughter, whose tombstone bears the single word, Beloved, returns as a spectre to punish her mother, but also to elicit her love. Told with heart-stopping clarity, melding horror and beauty, Beloved is Toni Morrison's enduring masterpiece.

'Toni Morrison was a giant of her times and ours..."Beloved," is a heartbreaking testimony to the ongoing ravages of slavery, and should be read by all' Margaret Atwood, New York Times

'The literary titan we must never stop learning from' Metro

Winner of the PEN/Saul Bellow award for achievement in American fiction

Customer Reviews

This is an awe inspiring novel that reaches in to the depths of horror and the heights of literature. There are passages that at once are an intellectual challenge to unpick and understand, but are crystal clear in their emotional power. The Guardian recently put this book as one of the top ten books that have shaped the world (http://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/aug/07/10-books-that-shaped-the-world). Whilst this list motivated me to get this book, at the time I did think its entry into the list was a little silly (see the comments on that page to get the idea), but having read it I fully get how powerful and transformative this book is.

This is the novel declared the greatest American novel of the last 25 years. Not only does she extend literal landscapes into figurative landscapes, she also uses ghosts and other doubling as a way to reveal the stories behind her characters. Truly epic in scope, and gorgeous in every sentence.

David Vann - 26/09/2013

A novel of great technical virtuosity set in the time of slavery in 1850s America. Its complexity is required by the emotional power with which it dramatises the horror of slavery. At its centre is a horrific event around which it has to circle cautiously and obliquely. This is a novel that has to be read and then re-read.
