Only You (Paperback)

Usually despatched within 2 days.

From the author of Miss You comes Kate Eberlen's impossibly romantic second novel, Only You.

One person is all it takes to change a lifetime . . . But how will you know if they're the one?

Letty and Alf are the only English speakers at an Italian class in Rome, where they discover the language that really connects them is dance: Letty's first love was ballet, while Alf was a junior ballroom champion. They come from different worlds, until the moment they waltz around the Piazza Navona, and everything changes.

But one moment can't change the past, and it's clear that Alf and Letty still have their secrets. What caused them to leave their lives behind in England? And who, or what, are they running from? As their relationship deepens, it becomes harder and harder to tell the truth . . .

When the unthinkable happens, Letty returns to London and Alf to Blackpool. Will they spend their lives apart, or discover a future together?

Kate Eberlen was born in a small town thirty miles from London and spent her childhood reading books and longing to escape to the big city. She studied Classics at Oxford University before discovering she was much less interested in the world of academia than the world of work. Kate has had many jobs, from lift girl in Harrods, au pair in Rome and New York, working in theatre box office and a career in publishing, before becoming a mother, teaching English as a Foreign Language and writing novels. Kate now lives in London. Only You is her second novel.

This is such a romantic and lovely novel, I loved every part of the story. The writing and pacing are really good and keeps you intrigued throughout the whole story. I really loved the main characters, Alfie and Letty, they were instantly likable. This book really surprised me and was so much more than I expected. There were some unexpected plot twists that I thought were amazing and made the novel so interesting and exciting to read. It deals with some topics that may be triggering for some like eating disorders, thoughts of self-harm, but I felt that the author handled these topics well. Overall, I loved this story and would highly recommend for anyone who wants to read an excellent romance novel!

This book has such a cleverly told story. It is split into three parts the first and last as present and the middle as a delve into the past to set up the story. The alternating chapters from different perspectives really add to the development through out the story. I found myself willing the characters to be together by the end and am very glad I picked this book up to read. I would definitely recommend this book to other people. It has a very similar feel to Me before You and really drew me in and kept me engaged the whole time. The author has portrayed the story incredibly and this was such a feel good read. Who doesn’t love and love story set in Rome? Very relatable and plots a gap betweeen YA and adult literature.

From the synopsis, I had a feeling that this was going to be my kind of book. It sounded right up my street. I remember thinking the same thing about Kate Eberlen's first book, Miss You. I liked how the book was split up into sections, starting with the present time, leading up to a tense moment, before skipping back to twenty months prior to that in part two, then going back to the present time in part three. It was a great breakdown of the story and an interesting way of telling it. I flew through part two because I needed to get back to the present day and see what happened. It was brilliant storytelling! I have to give a special mention to the setting. I have never been to Rome, or anywhere else in Italy for that fact, but I could see it all so clearly with the descriptions in this book. Obviously I've seen photos of the city but Kate Eberlen's way of describing the views and places immediately took me there. I loved the characters, especially the main characters of Letty and Alf. Letty was definitely my favourite. From the very beginning, she was someone that I wanted to know more about and really pulled me into the story. She was interesting and endearing and I could see why Alf was intrigued by her too. The character interactions were also great, with conversations that hooked me in, made me laugh and kept me turning the pages. I found that Kate Eberlen's writing style was almost addictive. I found the book incredibly hard to put down - even when it was almost 2am - and I would definitely describe it as a real page-turner. I was invested in the storyline, the characters and the outcome from the very beginning and I was confident after only a few pages that I was going to really enjoy this book. I was right. Overall, I loved this book. The Italian setting was amazing, the characters had me invested from the start, the writing had me hooked and it was perfectly paced. I thoroughly recommend this!

Set in Italy and Blackpool this book follows the lives of two younger adults who meet and fall in love almost instantly. The second half of the book had me wanting to read more and there were certainly a couple of shocks along the way. Well written so that you like or dislike certain characters. I felt the first section of the book could have had more going on as I seemed to be reading it for quite a while with not many changes to the direction of the story however as I got further into the book I realised that part really helped to set the scene for the rest of the story. A little disappointed that we didn’t get to see more of the love story between Alf and Letty towards the end. All in all a nice read.

Kate Ebberlen has done a fantastic job of making two very different but extremely well rounded characters in Alf and Letty. We get a good introduction to them in the first section and the chemistry that gradually builds up between them is beautiful. The descriptions of the places they visit in Rome (and in other parts of Italy later) are so enticing. When I learnt their backstories I felt so much sympathy for them both but especially Letty and her fear on having a relationship with Alf made so much sense. Without giving some of Letty’s story away I have to say I was so impressed with how some of her issues were mentioned here and there so they were obviously part of her but not purely who she is. Overall this is a very solid read with a lot of depth but page turning and atmospheric too - gorgeous.
