Foyles Fiction Book of the Year 2020 - Signed Bookplate Edition

It was a cool evening in late summer when Wallace, his father dead for several weeks, decided that he would meet his friends at the pier after all.

Introducing our 2020 Fiction Book of the Year: Real Life, the incredible debut novel from US writer and editor Brandon Taylor—a taut, elegant story of desire and detachment that thrums with energy as it circles closer toward its violent conclusion.

Real Life

Tightly focussed on Wallace, a young gay Black man deep into a biochemistry degree at a predominantly white Midwestern university, Real Life takes a scientific, almost forensic eye to Wallace’s life, the distance between himself and others, and his unexpected relationship with Miller, a seemingly straight man on the periphery of his social circle. Wallace and his peers seek to reinvent themselves at university, afresh from the trauma of their pasts—but the past has other plans, and as both the individuals and the system around him seek to use and disenfranchise him, Wallace buries himself in his work.

True to its name, Real Life is not a novel of heroes and villains but of utterly convincing characters, colliding; of racial prejudice and privilege, ambition and hopelessness; of desire, damage, self-absorption, flaws and face, and the mess people make when they coexist. It’s a focused, microscopic narrative, rendered with sublime sophistication, but one that resonates with broader experiences: systemic and casual racism, the mess of desire, isolation in community; the spectre of the past, and the uncertain, exciting, terrifying possibility of the future.

Garnering rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic and selected for the 2020 Booker Prize shortlist, Real Life is a masterful debut, and an assured, quietly devastating novel laced with dark humour, razor-sharp observation and simply phenomenal writing.
