Synopsis

Some are born into it. Some devote their lives to it. Others would kill to control it.

Coming soon from Bridget Collins, author of the 2018 smash hit The Binding, comes a delicious new treat: The Betrayals. Pre-order yours now, signed by the author and with coloured page edges, strictly available while stock lasts.

The Betrayals look insides

Prepare to be whisked off to Montverre, the cloistered mountain academy where scholars are trained in the mysterious grand jeu—the Great Game; the national pastime, the arcane ritual, the highly-competitive, highly secretive art that is not theatre, music, mathematics, war—nor even, truth be told, a game.

It is to Montverre that Léo Martin returns. Having once trained there, years ago, and gone on to work in the heart of the government, political discord sees him sent packing, back to the academy, as a rare guest. Here he retreads halls he had wished to forget, sees a face he is sure he recognises, and takes us back, through memory, to a past he cannot change—back to when he fought to be the greatest player of the game, his only real opponent the intolerable young Carfax de Courcy.

Collins once again immerses us into an ornately-detailed alternate world, propelling us forward with a taste for tantalising intrigue and mystery—while all around hidden machinations whirr away like parts of a giant clock. Power, faith, aristocracy, propaganda; politics, gender, the past and the future—all have a stake in the Great Game, and all will come to blows in The Betrayals.
