Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa was a Sicilian nobleman, Duke of Parma and Prince of Lampedusa. He was born in Palermo in 1896 and died in Rome in 1957. He lived the life of a literary dilettante, was familiar with the great literatures of the world, and was widely travelled. David Mitchell writes - I don't know how else to say it: one of the best novels written by anyone, anywhere, at any time. A Sicilian aristocrat watches his world fade away, taking his pre-eminence in it, with it.

David Mitchell - 11/03/2011

Can there be a better subject for a novel than the fall of aristocracy and the rise of the middle class? Ornate but not burdened, lovely and elegant, this one can make you want to hand all your money back to the aristocracy. Like rare birds. Maybe we should keep them.

David Vann - 26/09/2013
