The Joyful Environmentalist: How to Practise without Preaching (Paperback)

"This is the joy we need in our lives." - George Monbiot.

"This book, practical and realistic as well as visionary, will keep that positive message before the reader's eyes. Joy is after all one of the best motivations we can have for change." - Dr Rowan Williams.

Finally! A book about saving our planet that is fast, funny and inspiring too. Written in short chapters for busy people, Isabel doesn't bother with an examination of the problem but gets right on with the solutions. Her aim: to look for every single way we can take care of the planet; how we live and work, travel, shop, eat, drink, dress, vote, play, volunteer, bank - everything. And to do this wholeheartedly, energetically and joyfully.

Beginning with losing her cool in a restaurant that will only provide plastic cutlery, Isabel journeys through native tree planting in the Highlands of Scotland, playing Samba drums with Extinction Rebellion, interviewing in person the people that supply her energy and food - through every solution she can find - until both narrator and reader are fully equipped to be part of the pollution solution.

"She gave my spirit a lift and my feet somewhere to stand." - Sir Mark Rylance

I love this book! It really got me thinking, and I've been thinking environmentally for many years! But this took my thinking and actions to a new level, loads of new ideas, great suggestions, amusing anecdotes, and great writing. This is a great book for anyone interested in the environment and what they can do to protect it, whatever their level of understanding of the climate crisis. I especially enjoyed the section on rewilding which was something I hadn't really come across, and I am loving our veg boxes which were such a simple idea I'm not sure why I didn't do it years ago! A great gift and a great read, highly recommended.

This book really is joyful. It's full of ideas and inspiration and things you can do straight away. Isabel also makes you think about wider impact of your decisions. This takes a bit more effort, but lead me to some brilliant providers and producers. As a result, I've found local suppliers who are more than happy (and down right proud!) to share how they are doing good things. Small changes, big difference. Bigger changes, bigger difference I'm inspired to do more (and buy less!), and love that I can keep going back to the book when I need some inspiration and guidance.

This really is a joy to read! Isabel's sense of humour, honesty and conversational style just sweep you along. Which can be a problem at 2am when you really should be putting the light out! The book covers a vast range of environmental issues, all with the same charm and gentle touch. Many good, practical suggestions, tips on simple changes anyone can make,, and accounts of fascinating experiments being made by environmental pioneers. And it is very funny!

What a lovely book - I laughed out loud, learnt new things and was challenged (kindly!) to think a little differently. This book is a well researched and well written guide to what we can do to help the planet. It’s also about the joy that comes with being open to learning, to changing and finding positives in worrying times. I’d recommend this book to people who want to ‘get started’, to those (like me) who have the travel mug, the water bottle and the veg box but don’t know ‘what else’ - but also to anyone who loves honesty, humour and lovely writing. Excellent.
