Synopsis

Hemmed in by river, downland and sea, the archaeology of Kent has always had the reputation of being some of the most unique in Britain. So, when selected as one of the pilot counties for The British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme in 1997, it was suspected that this reputation would ensure Kent would reveal a wealth of discoveries. It has not disappointed, with thousands of finds being reported to the successive Finds Liaison Officers.

Kent has so far produced everything from the headline-grabbing Bronze Age gold Ringlemere cup, a Roman Republican helmet from Bridge and occasional Anglo-Saxon garnet-inlaid silver brooches, to the anonymous scattering of pot sherds, isolated lost keys and swathes of often indecipherable coins. Each one helps us fit together a bigger, clearer picture of Kent's history, its people and relationship with the wider world.
