Dr Larry J. Collins served as a cadet with the A.C.F. before enlisting as a Junior Leader with the Royal Signals in 1957. He left the Army in 1966 to train as a teacher of physical education and history at Madeley College where he graduated with a B.Ed. In 1974, after gaining an M.A. from Leeds University, he lectured at Worcester College of Higher Education. A change of career occurred in 1980 when he entered the theatrical profession. A return to academia resulted in a Ph.D. in theatre history being completed in 1994. The military connection was resumed in 1986 when he was commissioned into the R.A.F.V.R. (T) where he served with the A.T.C. in Essex. In 1991, on moving to Hertfordshire, he transferred to the A.C.F., and whilst there also served with the C.C.F. A further move in 1994 meant a transfer to Somerset A.C.F. and in 1996 to Shropshire, where he resides today. In 2004 he became the Deputy Commandant of Cheshire A.C.F. Larry J. Collins still writes and also teaches part-time. In June 2000 he was awarded the MBE for services to the Army Cadet Force.
