Fashioning Spain: From Mantillas to Rosalia (Hardback)

Pre-order for despatch on publication.

From female liberation to Franco's dictatorship, and from post-war economics to the digital age, Spain has experienced significant social, political, and economic upheaval in the 20th and 21st centuries. Simultaneously, its fashion cultures have undergone seismic shifts: women caused uproar by wearing pants in 1911 Madrid, Balenciaga shot to international stardom, female photographers exercised freedom under Franco's rule, and the mantilla took on dual meanings of angel and whore, tradition and modernity.

In the first book to explore the history of Spanish fashion in this eventful period, expert authors reveal how fashion reacts to, mirrors, and even critiques the world around it. Using a range of case studies and approaches, the book demonstrates that representations of and reactions to fashion are ripe with historical meaning, and offers unique insights into Spanish cultural life.

Francisco Fernandez de Alba is Associate Professor at Wheaton College, USA, where he teaches courses on modern and contemporary Spanish culture.
