Customer Reviews

Pretty standard Osprey fare - well illustrated with nice artwork and plenty of photographs (although some author photos were out of focus and really shouldn't have been included on quality grounds). The text is limited by the Osprey format but even so was padded out with a less than 100% useful list of places to visit. Heavily reliant on Vegetius' De Re Militari and the Strategikon of the emperor Maurice which are cited somewhat unquestioningly. Extracts from Ammianus' account of incidents from Julian's campaigns are perhaps the strongest part of the study. On the whole this volume looks in need of a refresh to take into account the last 20 or so years of research. It would benefit particularly by taking on board work in the area of Roman military equipment studies. So on balance not bad but not terribly good either 3/5.
