Ecrites non seulement pour affermir la foi des croyants, elles visaient aussi a obtenir aux missions jesuites le soutien royal et des appuis financiers et politiques, et a refuter les nombreuses critiques adressees a l'ordre.



Ajoutant a l'interet croissant de l'historiographie pour la litterature coloniale, Adrien Paschoud, dans son Savoir et apologetique dans le discours missionnaire jesuite, se concentre sur des lettres et des documents concernant les Ameriques. Par une analyse thematique et rhetorique, il explore les facons dont les Jesuites cherchaient a comprendre, a exprimer, et a communiquer leurs experiences de cette culture exotique. Paschoud etudie ensuite la reception des Lettres dans le climat socio-politique de la France au dix-huitieme siecle, une epoque ou l'autorite de l'Eglise faisait face a un laicisme croissant et a un Etat au pouvoir grandissant.



Allant au-dela de l'anthropologie et de l'histoire coloniale, l'etude innovatrice d'Adrien Paschoud montre comment la representation de l'alterite par les Jesuites est inseparable de leurs plus larges objectifs polemiques ou apologetiques. A travers son analyse de ces lettres de missionnaires, l'auteur met en lumiere les rapports complexes entre epistemologie et rhetorique, savoir et pouvoir.
