Synopsis

The town of Bolton, historically in Lancashire, had been an important textile town in the Middle Ages but during the industrial Revolution grew to become one of the major cotton manufacturing centres in the world. Engineering was also attracted to the area, with thousands employed in the manufacture of textile machinery, boilers, other heavy machinery and tools. As heavy industry and textile manufacturing declined during the 20th century, other businesses have taken their place and the people of Bolton and alongside the town's surviving mediaeval and mill buildings, a modern town has developed. But behind the face of today's Bolton lies a legacy of a massacre around 1500 people by Royalist forces during the siege of the Parliament-supporting town during the Civil War, Chartist riots, fatal aerial bombardment by German Zeppelin airships in World War 1, and a failed plan in 1924 by Lord Leverhulme to rebuild the town.

With tales of remarkable characters, unusual events and tucked away or disappeared historical buildings and locations, Secret Bolton will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of this town in Greater Manchester.
